Last month, we told you all about why metal roofing is great for homes and buildings in colder climates like ours. But regardless of the type of roof you have, there are some important things you can do to get it ready for winter. As one of the leading local roofing contractors in Saskatoon, we’d like to offer you the following advice.

First, give your roof a visual inspection. You can do this yourself, looking for places with obvious damage, or you can get a roofing company to come out and take a look. Roofing contractors will be able to easily see damage that may be less noticeable to the average homeowner. They’ll look for missing shingles or areas where the roof is cracked or has separated from the house. They’ll also look at how the roof fits against flashing, chimneys, or other openings.

Next, take a look at your gutters. Gutters that are pulling away from the home or are in generally poor condition will not fare well under the weight of snow. Clean out your gutters, too. Leaves and other debris that have accumulated during the summer and fall will clog up your gutters. Once the snow begins to melt, they won’t be able to handle the runoff. This creates opportunities for roof leaks.

Finally, make sure you have adequate insulation in your attic. If cold air drifts up and under your roofing, it can make it easier for ice dams to form.

Of course, there’s no way to be absolutely certain your roof won’t leak. However, following these steps will help you greatly reduce those chances.
